Remote AIS Reciever
The Remote AIS Reciever project was insitgated to improve the AIS coverage for the opertational HQ Systems, as the solent is very busy with both commercial and pleasure craft the original AIS Reciver did'nt always update as quickly as needed for rescue work, the operational area has many creeks and inlets, which traditionally have presented communications problems, The service has the "Seapro Navigation Software" and this is used for SAR and this has the ability to display AIS, with a second AIS Reciever one of the members wrote a multiplex program to combine multiple AIS and Other Data Inputs and to output to Seapro.
We were fortunate to have shared a police radio site for a number of years, and with the advent of Airwave the police vacated the site, the site owners allowed us to retain the site, with this came the opportunity to improve our AIS Reception coverage.
Once the software was confirmed to work a rack mount AIS Base was built with a 2.4Ghz RS232 modem connected to the AIS Reciever, this allows AIS Data to be transmitted from the remote base, back to the operational HQ Where another 2.4Ghz RS232 modem feeds into the Multiplex program, this has increased our coverage and provides a fast update of all AIS Traffic within the operational area
