Cadets virtual training
I volunteer with the HMS Sultan Volunteer Cadet Corps, at the start of the COVID Pandemic we quickly recognised due to social distancing requirements we would need to introduce alternative and innovative methods of teaching the cadets, as a unit we have always been fortunate to have a keen and enthusiatic team.
As the situation changed we were soon in a situation where we could only have 50% on the cadets in attendance at anyone time, to counter this and so that we could engage with our cadets, we identified that a virtual classroom was needed.
From this our Zoom Room was developed, we identified a room within our unit that provided space for use to setup a small video conferencing suite.
The initial room had been used as a storage space.
Once cleared we were able to start developing our Virtual Training capabilites.
Much of the equipment used in the room was either from our existing spare IT equipment or sourced for the room, 3 x Webcams, Microphones and Speakers were found on EBay
The unit purchased a Teltonika 4G router with an Unlimted SIM giving us around a 20MB service, which has proved sufficent for our current needs.
In use we have two Dell Vostro's as the main machines with a Dell 3010 as a table top demonstration presentation machine, all the machines are on thier own small independent network.
Each machine runs on Windows 10, with MS Office for presentations all the machines also have Zoom and Goto meeting available to be used for virtual training, we have also added OBS Studio which gives us extra presentation options.
For minimal cost by utilising our skills, previously spare equipment and limited funds we have achieved a facility that has allowed us to continue offering cadet training throughout the Lockdowns and remain engaged with cadets.
A future upgrade utilising some Ubiquiti Wifi Equipment will focus on provding an outdoors connection to allow practical field craft lessons to be delivered through the system.
